Nobody tells you this when you are planning your big move abroad: finding an apartment is going to be one of the hardest parts of the whole adventure.
Not the paperwork. Not the language barrier. The apartment hunt. Here is everything I wish someone had told me.
The References Problem
Most landlords want local references — previous landlords, employers, someone who can vouch for you. When you are brand new to a country, you have none of these. This is the catch-22 of expat life.
Solutions That Actually Work
Start with furnished short-term rentals while you search. It gives you breathing room and a local address. Facebook expat groups are your best friend — many landlords in these groups are experienced with international tenants. Consider using a relocation agency for your first month.
Red Flags to Watch For
Landlords who won’t meet in person. Prices significantly below market rate. Requests for large cash deposits before signing anything. Trust your gut — if something feels wrong, walk away.
